Making a wooden spoon

I always have small bits of ornamental trees that have been trimmed or removed for one reason or another. The size of the scraps doesn't lend it's self to much of a large project. Maybe a jewelry box or a wooden spoon. It's always fun to work a different wood.

After selecting a piece of wood I square it up using a small surface planer.

I don't measure anything, just "wing it". We are not building oxygen sensors for the space shuttle, it's a spoon. The wood is planed to about 1/2 inch thick and I draw out the rough shape.

I remove the extra wood with a table saw.

I spin up the spoon on the lathe. I made the wood lathe in high school metal shop class. Took me two years

After the handle is spun to about 1/2 inch thick I shape the outside of the bowl with sanders and files. To make the inside of the bowl I find a belt sander edge works pretty good if your careful.

The spoons have a coat of vegetable oil. The middle spoon is scraper. We use this style for browning hamburger.
